In business, there is an old saying: "Treat each client as if they are your only client and they will bring you more." I was in one of those giant hardware stores recently and I noticed something. The employees of the store were actively attempting to find customers to help. This is different because in years passed this same big store's employees were ghosts. You couldn't find help in one of those places if you tried. But something changed. What was it? How could a company go from no support in the aisles to customers being asked ten times if they needed help. What could possibly have made them switch? I have come to the conclusion that the answer is two fold. First, the economy tanked and second the competition got with the program. The Economy Plunged
The large company I was speaking about was Lowes. They were in such a great situation before the housing market fell off that they really didn't need to help every person in the place. They we all busy trying to handle the commercial orders that were being called in at record rates. But then the market lost its momentum and life as they knew it was gone within months. Commercial companies that had been spending thousands of dollars a month with them simply went out of business. Gone, vanished, nada. So now Lowes either has to lay a ton of employees off or find revenue the old fashion way, by earning it.
Competiton got tough
Not only was the market falling but the other players were beginning to play hard ball. Let's look at one simple example that will give you pause and hopefully you will realize just how powerful marketing is. In 2010, a small sized company that most big boys had forgotten about woke up and got with the program. If you watch much television at all you know that ACE Hardware has been advertising like crazy about getting into their store and getting the stuff you need to do the job quickly. This is smart marketing because it simply attacks the big boys where there was an issue. When you went to a Lowes you were never able to get into and get out of them quickly. The second area of this marketing is ACE is saying that you don't have to go there and waste your time because we have what you need to get the job done. This Two fold advertising is genious and hits the big boys right where it hurts>>In there pocket book.
Ace Company Earnings:"For the quarter, the company reported total revenues of $1.021 billion compared with $1.016 billion a year ago. Net income attributable to the company was $34.6 million, an increase of $5.8 million or 20.0%, compared to $28.8 million in 2010."
Lowe ' s Companies Earnings: Net income for Lowe ' s Companies, Inc. fell to $830 million (68 cents per share) vs. $832 million (58 cents per share) a year earlier. This is a decline of 0.2% from the year earlier quarter.
